The increasing use of stimulant medications to treat ADHD in the United States differs significantly from practices in the rest of the world. The U.S. produces and consumes about 85% of the world’s production of methylphenidate. These are not solutions to the problems, just suppressing the symptoms.
This is not a genetic problem but epigenetic (something outside the body stimulates change in genetics.
Facts
- Boys are affected more than girls ( 8:1 ratio)
- High overlap of symptoms: 50% of kids have more than one diagnosis
- Stimulant medications, especially Ritalin seem to improve symptoms temporarily
- Children are often on 3 to 5 different medications
What do we really know about the problem?
- There is decreased activity in the frontal lobes.
- There is a disconnect or desynchronization in communication between hemispheres.
- The sensorimotor loop involving the prefrontal cortex, Basal Ganglia, Cerebellum, and Thalamus, demonstrates both decreased activity and reduced size in the right hemisphere.
- This is most prominent in the cerebellum.

Diagnosis is typically vague utilizing parental interviews, subjective symptoms from a checklist from the DSM 4. These stand as syndrome disorders based on grouping of symptoms, not what is physiologically wrong with the child.
